Pastoral Support at St. James'

At St. James’, pastoral care is a vital part of our approach to supporting the whole child. All staff have received training in sensory diets and expert behaviour management, including zones of regulation and trauma and attachment training, ensuring that children's mental health remains a central focus in every classroom.

Each week begins with a PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) lesson, where children are encouraged to talk openly about their feelings and seek support when needed. If a child requires additional help, their class teacher will work closely with our Pastoral Lead, Mrs Allan, and the child’s parents to develop a tailored support plan.

Interventions may include:

  • Sensory breaks

  • Designated nurture time

  • Friendship groups

  • Bereavement support

  • Cognitive behaviour programmes

The aim of any intervention is to help children build the skills and resilience needed to manage their emotions and self-regulate effectively in the future. The impact of these strategies is carefully monitored, and communication with parents remains ongoing throughout the process.

Mrs Allan brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her role. Alongside her degree in Teaching and Learning, she has completed specialist training including:

  • Mental Health First Aid

  • Bereavement Support

  • Mental Health Leadership

She is deeply committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of every child, because at St. James’ we believe that happy children learn best and flourish in every area of life.
