Pastoral Support
Pastoral Support at St James’ Catholic Primary School
At St James’, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, happy, valued and, most importantly, loved. Pastoral care is at the heart of our school ethos and underpins everything we do. It is not the responsibility of one person alone; it is a commitment shared by every member of our school community, ensuring that every child feels a true sense of belonging and is supported to believe in themselves and achieve their full potential.
Our pastoral support is led by Mrs Allan, who is passionate about promoting children’s safety, happiness and emotional well-being. Working alongside our dedicated staff team, Mrs Allan helps to create a nurturing, inclusive environment where children feel confident to express themselves, talk about their feelings and know that there is always someone ready to listen.
We embrace a Listen, Link, Learn approach to pastoral care. Through this, we encourage children to understand and manage their feelings, develop positive relationships, make the right choices and recognise their own worth. By listening without judgement, linking children with the people and support they need, and helping them learn from their experiences, we aim to build the confidence, resilience and emotional understanding that will support them throughout their lives.
Mrs Allan is dedicated to building strong, trusting connections between home and school. We recognise that working in partnership with families is essential to helping children thrive. Whether offering reassurance and guidance, helping families access external agencies and specialist services, or simply sharing a friendly chat and a brew when things feel difficult, Mrs Allan is here to help. We want every family to know that they are not alone and that support is always available.
Bespoke Pastoral Support
We recognise that every child is unique, with their own experiences, strengths and needs. Our pastoral provision is therefore flexible and responsive, offering a range of support and interventions to help children flourish, including:
-
ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant): Using evidence-informed approaches to help children understand and manage their emotions, develop social skills and build emotional resilience.
-
One-to-one pastoral support: Providing a safe, supportive space for children to talk, reflect and work through challenges.
-
Bespoke programmes of support: Developing individualised interventions based on each child’s needs, experiences and circumstances.
-
Proactive pastoral interventions: Identifying emerging concerns early and providing support before difficulties become barriers to learning, relationships or well-being.
-
Trauma and attachment-informed practice: Applying our training and understanding of children’s experiences, relationships and emotional needs to help them feel safe, secure and ready to learn.
-
Compass Bloom counselling service: Providing access to additional emotional and therapeutic support when children need someone to talk to and help them navigate their feelings and experiences.
Our approach recognises that children learn best when they feel safe, secure and emotionally ready to engage. By placing relationships, compassion and understanding at the centre of school life, we aim to remove barriers to learning and ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish.
At St James’, pastoral care is about more than supporting children through difficult times. It is about nurturing the whole child, celebrating individuality, strengthening relationships and building a community where everyone feels they belong.
Belong. Believe. Achieve. These words are at the heart of our school and our pastoral approach. We want every child to know that they belong to our St James’ family, believe in their own potential and feel empowered to achieve their very best.
