Climate Action Impact Statement
St James’ Catholic Primary School
At St James’ Catholic Primary School, our commitment to climate action is rooted in our Catholic faith and our responsibility to care for God’s creation. Inspired by Laudato Si’, we recognise that caring for the Earth is an act of love for God, for one another, and for future generations. We are committed to embedding sustainability into the life of our school, ensuring that our actions reflect stewardship, justice, and hope.
Our climate action work is focused through four key pillars:
1. Biodiversity
We are committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity within our school grounds and local community. Through the development of green spaces, wildlife habitats, and nature-based learning areas, we aim to nurture respect for all living things. Pupils are encouraged to understand the interconnectedness of creation and to act as guardians of the natural world, fostering a sense of wonder, responsibility, and care.
2. Green Education
Sustainability and environmental responsibility are embedded across our curriculum and wider school life. We empower pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to understand climate change and take meaningful action. By linking learning to Catholic Social Teaching, we encourage children to become compassionate, informed global citizens who recognise their role in caring for creation and advocating for a fairer, more sustainable world.
3. Energy and Building Adaptation
We are committed to improving the environmental performance of our buildings and infrastructure. Through energy efficiency measures, responsible resource use, and climate-resilient adaptations, we seek to create safe, sustainable learning environments. These actions not only reduce our environmental impact but also support pupil wellbeing and long-term resilience in the face of a changing climate.
4. Decarbonisation
We are working towards reducing our carbon footprint through responsible energy use, the adoption of low-carbon technologies, and sustainable procurement practices. By monitoring emissions and making informed decisions, we aim to contribute to national and diocesan net-zero ambitions. Our approach reflects our commitment to justice, ensuring that our actions today protect the wellbeing of future generations.
Our Ongoing Commitment
Through collective action involving pupils, staff, families, governors, and our wider community, St James’ Catholic Primary School is committed to continuous improvement in climate action. We strive to be a place where faith is lived through action, and where caring for creation is central to our mission as a Catholic school.
