Reading Interventions

At St James', we believe that reading is at the heart of learning and essential for every child’s success. We are committed to supporting all pupils to become confident, fluent readers who can access the full curriculum and develop a lifelong love of reading.

For children who need additional support, we provide a range of targeted interventions designed to help them catch up and close the gap with their peers. These include:

  • Phonics Support – small group and 1:1 teaching to secure early reading skills.

  • Guided and Reciprocal Reading – focused sessions to build comprehension, fluency and vocabulary.

  • Reading Plus / Reading Fluency Programmes – structured approaches to improve accuracy, pace and confidence.

  • Targeted Small Group Work – using high-quality texts and tailored strategies to meet specific needs.

  • 1:1 Reading with Adults and Peer Reading – extra opportunities to practise and enjoy books daily.

We carefully track progress and adapt support to ensure that interventions are effective and matched to each child’s needs. Our aim is that every pupil not only learns to read well, but also develops a love of books and reading for pleasure.
