About the Governing Body

Governing Body

All maintained and voluntary aided schools in England are required to have a Governing Body, which plays a vital role in the leadership and strategic oversight of the school. The Governing Body works to ensure the school delivers a high-quality education while operating effectively, safely, and in line with statutory requirements.

Role and Responsibilities

The Governing Body is responsible for setting the school’s strategic direction and holding senior leaders to account. A key aspect of this role is to act as a “critical friend”—providing both support and constructive challenge, asking questions, and representing the interests of the whole school community.

Governors work in close partnership with the Headteacher, staff, and the Local Authority. While the Headteacher is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school, the Governing Body focuses on strategic matters, including:

  • Staffing and organisational structure
  • Curriculum provision and standards
  • School buildings and health & safety
  • Financial management and resource allocation
  • Safeguarding and child protection (a statutory responsibility)

The Governing Body ensures that the school maintains high standards in both academic achievement and pupils’ personal development and wellbeing.

Core Functions

In line with statutory guidance, the Governing Body’s core functions are to:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, including the performance management of staff
  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and ensure that public funds are used effectively and provide value for money

Meetings and Governance Structure

The Full Governing Body meets at least six times per academic year. These meetings enable governors to:

  • Monitor school performance and pupil outcomes
  • Review curriculum developments
  • Receive updates on safeguarding, finance, and resources
  • Make informed strategic decisions

In addition, governors may serve on committees or undertake link roles to provide focused oversight in specific areas such as safeguarding, finance, or curriculum.

Accountability and Transparency

The Governing Body is committed to transparency and accountability. In line with statutory requirements, the following information is available to stakeholders:

  • Details of the Governing Body structure and membership
  • Governors’ terms of office and attendance records
  • Register of business and pecuniary interests
  • Meeting minutes (available on request, with confidential items redacted)

Further information about the work of the Governing Body can be obtained by contacting the school office.

The Governing Body plays a crucial role in ensuring the school continues to provide a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment for all pupils.
